Feb 11, 2019 - Mayor puts pre-election wish-list to Canberra
Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor John Kremastos is part of a delegation of mayors from across Far North Queensland presenting a joint federal election wish-list in meetings with senior Ministers and Shadow Ministers in Canberra this week.
The Far North Queensland Region Of Councils (FNQROC) delegation includes seven mayors and three CEOs from Cairns, Tablelands, Mareeba, Port Douglas, Cook, Hopevale, Yarrabah, Wujal Wujal and Etheridge councils.
The group will present a united front on issues of importance to Far North Queensland, including commitments around environmental management, tourism infrastructure, digital connectivity, water and transport.
Cr Kremastos said he would be advocating for the Cassowary Coast Region as well as supporting issues raised generally by FNQROC.
The delegation would also be raising the need for urgent assistance for the councils in north-west Queensland whose regions had suffered widespread devastation and huge loss of livestock in the recent floods.
The mayors of Croydon and Carpentaria councils had cancelled their trip to Canberra due to the flood impact on their shires.
More than 20 meetings are scheduled across three days with Ministers, Shadow Ministers, Senators and senior advisors, including Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, Northern Australia Minister Matthew Canavan, Shadow Minister for Northern Australia Jason Clare, Defence Shadow Minister Richard Marles and Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen.
