Feb 7, 2019 - Council donates gumboots for Townsville volunteers
The Cassowary Coast Regional Council has donated about 250 pairs of gumboots to Queensland Fire and Emergency Service volunteers helping to clean up Townsville after the floods.
Mayor John Kremastos said the gumboots were left over from a consignment that had been donated to Cassowary Coast after a previous weather event.
“We are passing the gumboots on to another organisation that can use them while helping another community in need,” Cr Kremastos said.
“We have been through hardships ourselves and know what it is like to get a helping hand when times are tough. In the past other neighbouring councils and communities have come to our aid after significant weather events and it is standard practice to extend our hand where we can to other communities doing it tough,” Cr Kremastos said.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services is sending a second “Strike Force” of personnel and supplies to Townsville from Cairns tomorrow (Friday) to assist with the clean-up and will collect the boots on the way. Volunteers from State Emergency Service, Rural Fire and Urban Fire will travel in the convoy of 15 to 20 vehicles.
