COURTNEY ATKINSON ON 2020 RED BULL DEFIANCE:
Why Mission Beach presents Australia’s best adventure sport destination

  • Red Bull Defiance returns to Mission Beach 29 and 30 August 2020
  • 2019 event injected $1.13m into local economy, reaching 9.4m people across media platforms
  • Multisport athlete and 2019 winner Courtney Atkinson sets the challenge for 2020 with registrations now open

White water rafting down turbulent rivers, mountain biking through world heritage rainforest, paddling across ancient reefs, running through a tropical island and abseiling down mountain cliff faces; this mega two-day adventure race is hosted in one incredible adventure sport destination – the Cassowary Coast in Tropical North Queensland.

The Cassowary Coast Regional Council is thrilled to welcome the return of Red Bull Defiance for its second year to be held August 29 and 30 2020, following the enormous success of its 2019 event which injected $1.13M into the local economy, and exposed the destination to an audience of 9.4M people across multimedia platforms.

Attracting up to 100 teams in 2020, multisport athlete Courtney Atkinson has confirmed he’s up for the challenge following his success on the winning team last year with registrations already pouring in from eager competitors around the world.

Red Bull Defiance competitor, Courtney Atkinson, said “The course up here is really unique and [to compete in] the environment of the Cassowary Coast, where the rainforest meets the reef, means being up in the misty mountains, white water rafting and bashing away through the rainforest one day, the next day paddling in the middle of the ocean and running around Dunk Island.”

“What I really love about the event is others are experiencing why I love to come to North Queensland with competitors from last year saying this was some of the best experiences they’ve had, if they can take that away and share what we have up here in North Queensland then that’s great.”

“At the end of it you’ll walk away with a sense of achievement and get to see some amazing locations you probably wouldn’t see otherwise.”

Red Bull Defiance Course Director, Jarad Kohlar, said “Australia’s toughest two-day Adventure Race, ‘Red Bull Defiance’ will take you from the depths of Queensland’s rainforests back to its iconic reef.

“If you are in search of warm water, waterfalls, white sandy beaches, white water rapids and a classic Queensland pub, Red Bull Defiance has it all, you better be up for a bloody tough Aussie adventure.”

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor, John Kremastos, said “It’s great to welcome Red Bull Defiance back for a second year following the economic benefit and outstanding international exposure it achieved from last year’s event.”

“This Council has identified that adventure tourism plays a major part in utilising our natural assets which attracted Red Bull Defiance to the region following our success as hosts of the World Rafting Championships in 2019.”

“This is God’s own country – we have natural assets like rainforest and beautiful beaches as well as the people who are willing to work with organisations to make events like this happen.”
