June 25, 2020 - SPORTS BURSARIES

Cassowary Coast Regional Council today announced the launch of its annual Community Sports Bursary Program.

2020 will be the inaugural year of Council’s new initiative with six bursary packages of $750 and a polo shirt focusing on young people from 8 to 18 years of age with two bursaries ear marked to showcase first nation’s sporting achievements.

The program is designed to support young people in recognising significant sporting achievements and consists of six bursaries including:

  • Junior Sports Female (Age 8-12)
  • Junior Sports Male (Age 8-12)
  • Senior Sports Female (Age 13-18)
  • Senior Sports Male (Age 13-18)
  • Junior Indigenous Sports Person (Age 8-12)
  • Senior Indigenous Sports Person (Age 13-18)

The new program comes into effect as Council moves to cease membership with the North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF).

Mayor Mark Nolan said the new program will complement the existing Community Assistance Scheme and suite of sport and recreational services that include Youth Assistance financial support, annual grants and grant writing workshops.

‘Council is committed to creating opportunities for junior athletes by providing a suite of Sports Bursaries to promote, encourage and sustain sporting participation and healthy life styles in the Cassowary Coast,’

‘At this time,  the development of internal organisational capacities to promote, encourage, and represent the take up of sport at a grass roots level would provide a greater community benefit than continued membership with the NQSF,’ Councillor Nolan said.

Nominations for Council’s Community Sports Bursary program are now open and will close 4.30pm Wednesday 15 July 2020.
