June 27, 2019 - Stimulating the economy and sprucing up the shops

Cassowary Coast Regional Council will continue its incentive for commercial building owners and operators to spruce up their properties with a further $40,000 allocation in its 2019/20 budget.

Round two of the Façade Improvement Scheme aims to encourage more commercial building owners and business operators to invest in façade renovations and storefront improvements using local contractors.

Cassowary Coast Mayor John Kremastos said the scheme was being extended because of its success following an allocation in the 2018/19 budget.

“Last year 21 properties were given a facelift through a funding allocation of $38,909.76, resulting in an overall spend of $157,459.50 by property owners within the Cassowary Coast community using local contractors,” Mayor John Kremastos said.

“The Cassowary Coast has some wonderful buildings, so I’m encouraging all business operators to apply for a grant and reinvigorate their shopfronts.”

As part of the Façade Improvement Scheme, building owners and business operators can apply for a grant from Council for funding to contribute to a portion of the renovation costs.

The scheme specifies that improvement works must be external and visible from the street and local businesses and licensed tradespeople must be engaged to undertake the associated building work.

The subsidies are expected to generate similar levels of investment to last year, significantly benefiting local contractors.

“The economic activation of the region is an essential element of the core business of our Council,” Cr Kremastos said.

“Facade and shopfront refurbishment contractors will gain work and the economic benefits generated by the development incentive schemes will stay in the Cassowary Coast.”

The benefits of the scheme include increasing property value and tenancy, providing more attractive and welcoming spaces to locals and tourists, increasing foot traffic and civic pride, and promoting and encouraging activation of facades and the heritage of each location.
