Artists Wanted for Public Art Project

The Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation Inc. (C4) Mission Beach Artists Inc, and the Mission Beach Visitor Information Centre have been successful in securing a $50,000 public art grant from Arts Queensland’s ‘art+place’ programme. The aim of the project is to develop a Cassowary Discovery Trail of three permanent, contemporary cassowary sculptures, designed and produced by local professional artists, working in collaboration with emerging artists and students.

Educational information at each of the installations throughout the villages of Mission Beach will highlight environmental, indigenous, cultural and historical issues with this iconic and endangered species. The project will produce three installations, located at Mission Beach, South Mission Beach and Wongaling Beach. On successful completion of this first stage funding application will be made to produce six more cassowary sculptures over the next two years.

The project aims to employ local artists and encourage collaboration between them and emerging artists and community groups. Mentoring is also encouraged. All applicants must be residents of the Mission Beach area, broadly defined, or a member of ‘Mission Beach Artists. Inc’

The project is to be completed by 30th April 2009.

An information evening providing the details and requirements of the project will be held on Monday evening 11th August at 6.00 pm in the C4 Theatrette. All interested artists and members of the community are encouraged to attend.
