Council officers locate dog responsible for attack

The dog responsible for an attack on an East Innisfail teenager earlier this week has been located and put down by animal control officers with the Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC).

CCRC Environmental Health Manager, Geoff Wilson, said a resident in the East Innisfail area had spotted the dog on their property and had called the council yesterday afternoon to report the sighting.

“The two animal control officers who attended the scene of the attack on 15-year-old Dean Thompson, in Ryan Street East Innisfail on Monday afternoon, were despatched to investigate the sighting,” he said.

“They located the dog, as reported, on the East Innisfail property and identified it as the animal which was responsible for the attack on the boy.”

The dog was subsequently put down.

Mr Wilson said the dog, while not confirmed as a pit bull terrier or pit bull-cross, “was similar in appearance”.

He said the council had received a number of phone calls from the community during the search for the dog.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who contacted us and tried to help us to locate this dangerous animal,” he said. “Their efforts to assist us were much appreciated.”
