Residents urged to use less tap water during flooding
There may be plenty of rain water bucketing down outside, but Cassowary Coast residents are being asked to use tap water sparingly over the next few days.
Cassowary Coast Mayor, Bill Shannon, is urging residents to restrict their use of reticulated water, in order to reduce the demand on local water treatment plants currently burdened by flood waters.
“These flood waters, which contain high levels of dirt, are placing excessive demands on our water treatment plants,” Cr. Shannon said.
“We need to reduce our own water usage, in order to help the treatment plants cope.”
The Mayor also reminded residents to avoid walking or swimming in storm water drains during the current weather conditions. Children were at particular risk from storm water hazards.
“Parents need to ensure their children do not play in storm water drains,” he said.
“Due to localised flooding, storm water may contain a range of hazards, including debris, strong currents and even sewerage overflows.”
Motorists are also being urged to use caution on the roads.
“Council staff and RoadTek personnel are monitoring roads subject to flooding, including several in the Innisfail area,” Cr. Shannon said.
Road users seeking information about flooding are advised to contact Main Roads on 131940 or the RACQ on 1300 130 595 or visit the RACQ.
