Johnstone River poses threat to Innisfail residents

The Johnstone River is expected to rise to 5.5 metres by 6pm today, threatening properties in a number of locations in Innisfail.

Cassowary Coast Mayor, Bill Shannon, urged residents in the locations listed below to make immediate preparations to try to minimise the impact of any flooding that may occur:

  • Jodrill Street
  • Lower end of Corinda Street
  • Lower end of Benwell Street
  • Lower end of Campbell Street
  • Lower end of Donald Street

“If possible, move vehicles, outdoor equipment, garbage bins and chemical containers to higher locations,” Cr. Shannon advised.

“Also, consider in advance which indoor items – such as furniture, clothes and electrical equipment – you can safely transfer to a higher location inside the house, if water threatens to enter. You should also empty fridges and freezers if flooding appears inevitable.

“Don’t forget to think about what to do with your pets, as well,” Cr. Shannon said.

For emergency assistance, residents are advised to contact the SES on 132 500.
