Beach working bees – a hive of activity
Keen green locals are donning their gardening gloves to take part in a series of beachfront working bees organised by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.
Residents at Bingil Bay, North Mission Beach and Flying Fish Point have turned out over several weekends recently to remove weeds, plant trees and clean up rubbish along their beachfronts, as part of a Caring for Our Country, Community Coastcare project initiated by the council.
CCRC Natural Resource Management Coordinator, Ken English, said the project focussed strongly on working in partnership with coastal communities to enhance the natural and biodiversity values of coastal dune systems and their vegetation.
“Together, we are working to remove invasive species, revegetate and implement a range of actions to manage vehicle and pedestrian access,” he said.
The next beach working bees will take place on Saturday 16 May from 9.00 a.m. at the Bingil Bay picnic area and from 8.30 a.m. at the Cowley Beach boat ramp.
“All you have to bring along is a hat, a water bottle, footwear and your gardening gloves,” Mr English said. “By the time you have finished, you are guaranteed to leave with a sense of satisfaction.”
