Council to review road closure options
The Cassowary Coast Regional Council will review measures to prevent further use of the Kirrama Range Road, which has been officially closed to public traffic since July 2006.
Last Saturday (18 July 2009), a trail bike rider died when he collided with a four-wheel-drive vehicle on the unsealed former forestry road, about 25 km from Kennedy. The driver of the 4WD was not injured.
CCRC Director of Works, David Trotter, said road signs advising motorists that the Kirrama Range Road was closed had been in place for three years.
“In light of this fatal accident, it is hoped that drivers will now think twice about ignoring the road closed signs – and avert any further tragedies,” he said.
“If the review determines that additional measures are required to further reinforce the message that the road is closed, then these will be implemented.”
The review of road closure measures will be undertaken on the road at the bottom of the range, near Kennedy Creek, and also on the border between the Cassowary Coast and Tablelands regions.
The review is expected to be completed by the end of July.
