Draft plan to promote ship-shape harbour
People who wish to have their say on the Cassowary Coast Regional Council’s draft plan to upgrade and expand marine facilities at the Innisfail Boat Harbour should submit their comments by next Friday (31 July 2009).
The draft Land Management Plan for the harbour, located on the Johnstone River, includes proposals to construct additional mooring facilities, pontoons and other marine infrastructure to enhance use of the area.
More than 70 commercial fishing vessels currently are based either in the harbour or at private moorings outside the harbour area. The harbour is also used by game fishing vessels (for private and charter purposes), permanently moored private sailing and motor vessels, visiting yachts and motor cruisers.
Cassowary Coast Mayor, Bill Shannon, said the Land Management Plan recognised that the Innisfail Boat Harbour was a key community focal point and aimed to encourage a range of different activities in the area.
“Some of the existing marine infrastructure is limited in capacity and is nearing the end of its useful life,” he said. “The council appreciates that additional and improved boat mooring facilities are required.
“The proposed facilities would allow greater use of the area, for both community and commercial purposes.”
Copies of the draft Land Management Plan can also be viewed at all Cassowary Coast Regional offices.
