Cassowary Coast Regional Council

Divided or Undivided Divided or Undivided

Why has this issue come up?

This issue arose following a community group’s concern in relation to the number of electors in Division 3. Investigations revealed that Division 3 had exceeded the number of electors allowed by the Local Government Act 2009 to ensure equal representation on the Cassowary Coast. This meant the Local Government Change Commission would need to review divisional boundaries. At the December meeting of Council it was decided to use this opportunity to canvass the community’s feelings on moving to an undivided local government region to avoid ongoing division boundary reviews as the region’s population continues to grow.

No decision has been made or preferred options identified by Council.

It is important that you have your say. Community feedback will allow Council to make an informed decision about whether to consider requesting that the region proceed to the next election undivided.

The outcomes of the community consultation and Council’s recommendation will be presented to the Minister for Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs and the Queensland Electoral Commission, which will decide future local government election arrangements for the Cassowary Coast Region.

Any request for a change or review to take effect for the 2020 Council elections needs to be made to the Minister for Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs by 1 March 2019.
