April 2019 - Cassowary Coast buzzing with culture and confidence

The Cassowary Coast is humming with events across the region providing a buzz for locals and attracting international visitors while boosting our economy.

Our beautiful Art Deco Innisfail Shire Hall filled to capacity twice in as many weeks with 450 people attending the preview of local film Celeste and the Celtic illusion performance on Sunday night.

Celeste gave excited locals an opportunity to dress up, walk the red carpet and meet director Ben Hackworth and actor Thomas Cocquerel.  The electric atmosphere at Celtic Illusion thrilled residents from across the region. Nearby restaurants were busy before and after the show, which was great to see. Community support will ensure we will see more first-class entertainment.

We are four weeks out from the World Rafting Championships on the Tully River, to be contested by 51 teams from 18 countries. More than 1000 people are expected to attend. Next will be Red Bull Defiance challenge over August 31 and September 1, another huge event to stimulate the economy and put Cassowary Coast in the world spotlight.

These events underline growing investor confidence in our region, including two new housing developments. One, in Innisfail, has been in the pipeline for 14 years and reconfigures five lots into 49 lots. The other is a subdivision of two lots into 39 at Feluga.

Council has presented our ‘wish list’ to Kennedy electorate candidates in the May 18 Federal election. We ask candidates to support the Australian Local Government Association and Local Government Association of Queensland’s push for grant funding to be restored to at least one per cent of Commonwealth taxation revenue. This would enable Councils to better target local projects and the real challenges and opportunities facing our communities.
