The new year is shaping up as an exciting and busy one for residents, businesses and producers. The World Rafting Championships take place on the Tully River in May and businesses are urged to make the most of the opportunity by registering their interest with the WRC organisers ( We will be in the world spotlight when more than 3000 competitors, supporters and family converge on the Cassowary Coast for two weeks or more. Everyone from hairdressers and tour operators to B&Bs and restaurants are encouraged to let them know where you are and what you do.

Council is always alert for economic development opportunities for the region and last week I was delighted to attend Star Entertainment Group’s briefing in Cairns. The group is behind a multi-billion dollar Gold Coast integrated resort development and the Queen’s Wharf hotel, restaurant and shopping precinct development in Brisbane’s CBD. It is looking for quality produce and tourism suppliers. This could be a long-term opportunity for established and start-up food-producers, high-end tropical horticulture growers and flagship Cassowary Coast businesses. We see Council as an important conduit in promoting business activity, community development and prosperity within our region.(See

Work is ongoing to ensure better drinking water security for the beach communities with the Wheatley’s Hill 4.6 megalitre reservoir under construction. Funding has also been set aside for construction of a Bulgun Creek intake reservoir to supply clean water for Tully. New smart meters are also being installed as part of Council’s commitment to conserve water and reduce wastage.
