Controlling Weeds with Steam on the Cassowary Coast
Cassowary Coast Regional Council is swapping chemicals with steam— and with great results.
Cr Jeff Baines said Council's Parks officers were now using a steam unit to control weeds on Cassowary Coast foreshores, in playgrounds and parkland.
"The advantages include a reduction in chemical usage and the ability to now control weeds in all weather conditions including wind and rain,'' Cr Baines said.
"This is also a great initiative as a Reef Guardian Council with an ongoing goal of increasing environmentally-sustainable practices.''
Cassowary Coast Regional Council was one of several Far Northern councils to trial a steam weeding unit in the last few months. Hot water, converted to steam, kills the cells in weeds.
"The equipment is also great for cleaning signs and murals and de-moulding pathways,'' Cr Baines said.
