May 15, 2019 - 'Awesome' start to World Rafting Championships
An upbeat Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor John Kremastos described the street parade and party atmosphere at the opening of the IRF2019 World Rafting Championships in Tully yesterday (Tuesday) as “awesome”.
He and fellow councillors marched with the Cassowary Coast flag at the head of the parade of paddlers, school children and community groups from Mitchell Park opposite the Council chambers in Tully and down the main street to the showgrounds.
“It was a fantastic afternoon and evening and great to see so many schools and community groups come together to support the event,” Cr Kremastos said.
“The number of people in the parade and spectators lining the streets to the show grounds despite the rain really added to the magic of the event.
“The party atmosphere at the show grounds during the formalities was infectious and it was great to see the people mixing with the teams. Our traditional owners invited the visitors to join in their cultural dances so we had a true intercultural experience with our Indigenous culture mixing with the international community.
“For many of our international visitors this experience with our local Indigenous people will no doubt be a highlight of their time on the Cassowary Coast.”
