Tilapia Fishing Tournament Nets 300 Fish
Approximately 300 Tilapia fish weighing in at approximately 69.5 kilograms, were caught by over 250 contestants at the Tilapia Fishing Tournament held at Warrina Lakes in Innisfail on Saturday.
The overall tournament champion was Phillip Cupitt (13-17 year old category) who caught the most fish weighing in at 11.4 kilograms and won the Brandan Roos Memorial Trophy. Roos played an integral role in the inception of the Tournament and is greatly missed.
Over 600 people attended the event hosted by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council where Councillors Jeff Baines and Mark Nolan manned the BBQ that served a sausage sizzle to the hungry crowd.
A huge thank you to our sponsors Tackle World, BCF and River 'n' Reef for providing all the winners with prizes.
“It was wonderful to see so many families out with their children on such a spectacular day. Warrina Lakes is such an amazing venue and we’d like to see more activities being held there. It is one of our most underused assets,” said Cr Jeff Baines.
“The sustainable outcome of this event is that the noxious tilapia fish are composted into fertiliser for use in Council’s gardens,” he added.
