July 14 2017: It's time to register your dog

It's dog registration renewal time on the Cassowary Coast.

Mayor John Kremastos said renewal notices were being mailed out to all dog owners on Council's data base and he encouraged those who had not received a reminder by 24 July to contact Council and update their records.

All dogs over three months need to be registered, in line with the State Government's animal management legislation.

Mayor Kremastos said discounts were available for payments made before 18 August for de-sexed dogs and dogs owned by pensioners.

"Dog registration is mandatory and is a part of responsible pet ownership," he said.  "Registered and microchipped dogs have a much better chance of being reunited with their owners if they become lost, and the registration fees fund Council's animal services such as helping lost dogs."

The pound release fee is waived the first time a registered dog roams and needs to be recovered.

While registration is mandatory for all dogs, Mayor Kremastos said the fees could be waived for young dogs (aged between 13 weeks and 6 months) and dogs on rural-zoned land.

Registration fees fund animal management services and facilities across the Cassowary Coast region - from responding to dog problems, complaint investigations and community education to operating Council’s animal pounds. Funds also help to run the region’s animal refuge.

Regulations allow for two dogs per urban property.  Owners can ask about a special permit for an extra dog to be kept on their property.

"New and existing dog owners who have not received a renewal notice by 24 July are advised to contact Council on 1300 763 903 or visit the Innisfail, Tully or Cardwell customer service centre to complete a registration application," Mayor Kremastos said.

"Dog owners can also update any change in details when re-registering their dog or dogs."

He said registration renewals would be followed up with the third stage of an all-of-region dog audit which has so far resulted in more than 70 fines and hundreds of additional registrations.

For more information about registrations and micro-chipping, call Council on 1300 763 903.
