Flood Maps

The Cassowary Coast Regional Council Community Flood Awareness website is an initiative of the Council and Johnstone Shire River Improvement Trust, to deliver some of Council’s Geographic Information System data to the World Wide Web.

The purpose of the site is to help mitigate against the effects of flooding by raising awareness of flood risk and encouraging individuals and organisations to prepare appropriate household and business disaster plans.

The Johnstone River Floodplain Management Plan 2003 conducted by the Johnstone River Improvement Trust, a community reference group and consultants placed a high priority on raising community flood awareness and the implementation of Colour Banded Flood Totem Poles. This website is a continuation of the management measures of the floodplain management plan.

The maps show the estimated 2, 5, 10, 50, & 100 year average recurrence interval (ARI) statistical flood levels as used in the Council Planning Scheme and also several mediation measures. The flood analysis is based on comprehensive computer modelling calibrated against records of actual flood events.

The following link provides locations, street names, aerial photography and available flood mapping for defined areas of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council. The areas were defined by the Lower Johnstone River Flood Study of 2003 and the Tully Murray Meunga Creek Inundation Study of 2008.
