Volunteers the Backbone to our Community

Back

Volunteering brings people together and creates stronger, more inclusive, and more resilient communities.

This week, Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC) is celebrating National Volunteer Week, to recognise the vital work of volunteers and to say thank you.

Council currently hosts over 50 volunteers who generously and tirelessly give their time week in and out for the community, ensuring programs and services across CCRC Libraries, Nurseries and Visitor Information Centres are available to all.

Council nursery volunteer Connie Symons, has been volunteering at the Innisfail Nursery for over 20 years.

“I originally began volunteering as I loved trees and wanted to learn more.

“I love coming to the nursery, it is a happy place with great, caring people and I always leave feeling relaxed.

“Through volunteering at the Nursery I truly feel I am leaving behind a great heritage with trees that will grow for hundreds of years to come,” said Ms Symons.

Councillor Trudy Tschui said volunteers like Connie are the backbone of our community.

‘The effort and commitment of volunteers should not be understated, and not just those who volunteer through Council programs, there are many volunteer groups across our region that deserve our thanks and acknowledgement.

‘I am passionate about the value of volunteering and its positive impacts on our communities. Which is why I have recently taken up a presence at market stalls across the region to actively advocate for and promote community groups seeking new members.
