Local Laws

Local laws help keep our region safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone. They cover things like animal management, use of public spaces, parking, noise, and overgrown properties.

The Cassowary Coast’s current local laws came into effect on 1 October 2022, in line with the Queensland Government’s Local Government Act 2009.

What Do Local Laws Cover?

Local laws help manage:

  • Animal keeping and control
  • Overgrown properties, weeds, and pests
  • Noise, dust, and other nuisances
  • Car parking rules
  • Use of parks, reserves and public spaces
  • Signs and outdoor dining areas

They’re here to help protect public health, safety, and the local environment.

Common Local Law Issues

Abandoned Vehicles

Council investigates reports of vehicles that may be abandoned on public land such as roads or nature strips. Officers check registration, attempt to contact owners, and may impound vehicles if necessary.

Learn more about how we manage abandoned vehicles and the investigation process visit Council's Abandoned Vehicles page.

Overgrown Properties

Property owners must keep their land tidy to avoid safety and health risks. Council may issue notices to clean up overgrown lots.

Parking rules apply in Innisfail, Tully and Mission Beach and Cardwell to keep things moving and fair for all.

Nuisances

Nuisances can be dust, smoke, air, light and noise at a property. Laws have been introduced to help keep a balance between quality of life and monitoring activities that have the potential to annoy others within the community.

  • For residential premises, the use of lawn mowers, power tools and hammers is restricted to Monday to Saturday 7am – 7pm and Sunday or public holidays 8am and 7pm.
  • For residential or commercial construction sites the use of air compressors, concreting equipment, power tools, vibratory equipment, hammers and generators is restricted to Monday to Saturday 6.30am to 6.30pm. No audible noise is permitted on Sundays and public holidays.
  • A barking dog nuisance requires numerous elements of the local law to be substantiated. Refer to Dogs – Cassowary Coast Regional Council
  • Other animal noise nuisances (e.g. roosters crowing) may be able to be dealt with under the animal management local law.

Please read this noise nuisance table so you know who to contact for your issue:
