Cardwell community shares views on potential future sewerage network

Recently, we invited the Cardwell community to have their say on a potential future sewerage network for the township, what it could mean for the community, and whether Council should undertake further planning and investigations.

While the community was almost evenly divided on whether or not Council should undertake further investigations, key themes raised through the consultation included:

• concerns about potential connection costs and ongoing wastewater service charges
• many respondents said their current septic or on-site systems are working well
• many see potential benefits for waterways, coastal areas, and the broader environment
• many see potential benefits for housing, tourism, and future infrastructure
• questions about who would benefit, who would pay, and whether a network is needed.

What happens next

Councillors and Council officers are currently reviewing the community’s feedback. This step in the process will help inform a recommendation on whether or not to pursue further investigation into a potential sewerage network for Cardwell.

Councillors will consider the recommendation at the September 2026 Local Government Meeting, and we update the community on Council’s decision.
