Plan underway to improve disability access and inclusion in Cassowary Coast region

The Cassowary Coast Regional Council is proud to announce the development of its first Disability Inclusion and Accessibility Plan, a significant step towards creating a more equitable and inclusive region for all.

Recognising that our region has a higher-than-state-average population of people with disability, this initiative has been identified as a priority action in the Council’s integrated Corporate and Operational Plan 2025–2030.

The importance of this plan was further highlighted in the 2024 MARKYT Community Scorecard, where inclusion and accessibility were identified as key areas for improvement.

In response, Council has committed to enhancing access and inclusion across the Cassowary Coast region.

This plan will serve as a guiding framework for future decisions on events, infrastructure, placemaking, and processes, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of our community.

To ensure the plan is comprehensive and reflective of the community’s aspirations, Council is collaborating with Inclusive Consulting, an independent expert in accessibility and inclusion.

Together, we are engaging with the community and key stakeholders to ensure the voices of all residents are heard and respected.

We invite all community members, including individuals with lived experience of disability, support workers, carers, and other stakeholders, to participate in shaping this vital plan.

Your input is invaluable in helping us create a region where everyone feels welcome, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Together, we can build a more inclusive and accessible Cassowary Coast.

Community members can join an upcoming workshop to share ideas and experiences. Bookings are essential and can be made through the Council’s website.

Community members can also complete a survey, which is open until 8 May 2026. Surveys are available at Council libraries, customer services centres, and online at https://yoursay.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au.
