Preventing Sewage Overflows

Although we have a great sewage network, sometimes sewage can still overflow or “spill”.  Sewage overflows can pose serious health and environmental risks. Cassowary Coast Regional Council is dedicated to minimising these incidents by maintaining infrastructure and educating the community on preventive measures.

What Causes Sewage Overflows?

Several factors can lead to sewage overflows:

  • Blocked Pipes: Items like wet wipes, fats, oils, and grease can clog sewer lines.
  • Stormwater Infiltration: Heavy rainfall can cause stormwater to enter the sewer system, overwhelming its capacity.
  • Infrastructure Failures: Damaged or aging pipes and equipment can lead to system failures.

Role of Overflow Relief Gullies (ORGs)

An Overflow Relief Gully (ORG) is a plumbing device located outside your home, designed to release sewage outside if there's a blockage, preventing it from entering your home.

To ensure your ORG functions properly:

  • Keep it Clear: Ensure the ORG is free from obstructions like plants or debris.
  • Check Compliance: The ORG should be at least 150mm below the lowest internal drain and 75mm above ground level.
  • Install Stormwater Exclusion Devices: Council offers devices that prevent stormwater from entering the sewer system through ORGs.

How You Can Help

Residents play a crucial role in preventing sewage overflows:

  • Dispose Properly: Avoid flushing non-degradable items and pouring fats or oils down the drain.
  • Maintain ORGs: Regularly inspect and ensure your ORG is compliant and unobstructed.
