Sustainable Events

The Cassowary Coast is a unique natural destination alongside the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Our region is also officially recognised as an ECO Destination, reflecting its commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental protection. This is why we encourage sustainable event planning at all stages of event delivery to help protect the environment and support the Cassowary Coast’s green, tropical character.

Simple actions can make a big difference, including reducing waste, conserving water and energy, encouraging sustainable transport, and choosing reusable or recyclable materials.

Event organisers are encouraged to:
  • Avoid single-use plastics where possible.
  • Provide clearly labelled waste and recycling bins.
  • Use reusable, recyclable or compostable products and packaging.
  • Source local goods and services where practical.
  • Minimise water and energy use.
  • Encourage walking, cycling, carpooling or public transport where available.
  • Protect natural areas, waterways and wildlife.
  • Reduce food waste and unnecessary packaging.
  • Communicate sustainability measures to volunteers, vendors and attendees.
  • Review outcomes and identify improvements for future events.
