Cassowary Coast Regional Council will introduce new speed limit changes to several streets in the Innisfail CBD to improve driver and pedestrian safety.

The limits in the following streets will be reduced from 50km/h to 40km/h:

  • Rankin Street (between Grace Street and McGowan Drive)
  •  Fitzgerald Esplanade (between Grace Street and the Jubilee Bridge roundabout)
  •  Edith Street (between the Bruce Highway and Fitzgerald Esplanade)
  •  Owen Street (between Grace Street and McGowan Drive).

QPS requested Council to undertake a speed limit review due to the lack of consistency and traffic incidents they attend to regularly.

As a result of this assessment, Council engineers determined the most appropriate speed limit for this area is 40km/h.

This was endorsed by the Cassowary Coast Speed Management Advisory Committee which is represented by officers from Transport and Main Roads, the Queensland Police Service, and Council.

Speed limits will come into effect and be enforced once the signage is installed.

Mayor Teresa Millwood said the changes will help keep all road users safe.

“The change to 40km/h in the CBD really isn’t a big shift for most of us,” Mayor Millwood said.

“When we’re in town we tend to slow down anyway as we look for a park, cross the road, or stop to chat.

“I’d really encourage everyone to start driving to the new 40km/h limit now, even before all the signs are in, so it becomes second nature.

“It’s a simple way we can all do our bit to make the Innisfail CBD safer and more comfortable for locals and visitors.”
