Cassowary Coast Regional Council has welcomed today’s announcement by the Crisafulli State Government to confirm the start of early works at Port Hinchinbrook.

The state government announced it had acquired key sites and that the State’s first-ever Provisional Land Use Plan was now in effect, which will guide the site’s restoration and future development. The conformed deed which sits over the property will also be extinguished.

These steps now allow early works to begin, including initial repair works to prevent acid sulphate soils from leaching into surrounding mangroves, as soon as weather and ground conditions allow. These works are critical to stabilising the site and protecting the environment while preparations for dredging continue.

Council has consistently advocated for a sustainable and appropriate solution for Port Hinchinbrook and today’s milestone represents meaningful progress and renewed momentum for the region.

To maintain momentum and ensure the project delivers real benefits for the region, Council will continue to work closely with Economic Development Queensland as planning and implementation progress.

In November 2025, the State Government announced that Port Hinchinbrook would be Queensland’s first-ever Provisional Priority Development Area (PPDA), which would unlock the full tourism, economic and residential potential of the marina and surrounding Cardwell region.
