Mission Beach Aquatic Centre – 25m outdoor pool temporary closure

What’s happening

Council will be carrying out essential renewal works at the Mission Beach Aquatic Centre, which includes the replacement of the accessibility ramp handrails for the 25m outdoor lap pool.

This only includes the lap pool; the Billabong Pool and Hydro pool will be open for use.

To complete these works, the pool will need to be fenced, drained, fitted with new handrails, refilled and returned to the required national public pool and spa water quality standards.

While the pool is empty, Council will also inspect the pool structure and may complete minor maintenance works, including resealing expansion joints, tightening ladder fixtures and other small repairs.

When

Closure starts: 15 September 2026
Expected reopening: Tuesday 6 October 2026
Working hours: 6am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday, depending on activities.

What’s affected

The 25m outdoor lap pool will be closed for about three weeks.
Other areas of the Mission Beach Aquatic Centre will remain open, including:
  • the billabong pool
  • the indoor/hydro pool.

Community impacts

During the works, the community can expect:
  • no access to the 25m outdoor lap pool
  • partial closure of the aquatic centre
  • minor noise impacts
  • some internal changes to patron access within the centre.
There will be no road closures, traffic detours or water interruptions.

Why this work is needed

These works are necessary to maintain safe and accessible use of the facility.
This is the first time the 25m outdoor pool has been drained since opening in 2018. The timing has been planned to minimise disruption by scheduling the closure between school terms, during drier weather and when other aquatic centres in the region are open.
