Cassowary Coast Council Advocates for Sustainable Future at Cabinet

At the recent Community Cabinet meeting in Cairns on Sunday 2 March 2025, the Cassowary Coast Regional Council, presented bold initiatives designed to drive environmental sustainability and enhance community wellbeing across the region.

Mayor Teresa Millwood had discussions with Deputy Premier Hon. Jarrod Bleijie and Minister Hon. Andrew Powell, highlighting three priority areas that require urgent support: Port Hinchinbrook, community carbon and biodiversity offsets, and resource recovery.

“Our region is deeply committed to sustainability and the preservation of our unique ecosystems for future generations,” said Mayor Teresa Millwood. “By advancing key projects like Port Hinchinbrook normalisation, carbon and biodiversity offsets, and improving waste diversion, we’re creating lasting benefits for both the environment and the economy.”

Key Advocacy Areas:

Port Hinchinbrook Normalisation: Significant steps have been made in the normalisation of Port Hinchinbrook. Council is advocating for the Queensland Government to acquire the remaining land in liquidation. This would build confidence in the development whilst protecting the environment and boosting tourism in the region.
Brisbane 2032 Olympics Offsets: Council propose an innovative carbon and biodiversity offset project in the Cassowary Coast to support the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. This initiative will restore local ecosystems, sequester carbon, and protect endangered species like the Southern Cassowary, while providing long-term environmental and community benefits.
Resource Recovery: Council is introducing kerbside recycling on the 24th of March 2025. This will deliver significant waste diversion and align with the Queensland governments waste targets. Mayor Teresa Millwood highlighted the need for ongoing state and federal government support to ensure the success of these initiatives.
