Cassowary Coasters are built different when it comes to severe weather

Forecasts are pointing to a drier and warmer than average start to the season up here. But whether it’s warm, wet or windy, it’s nothing we haven’t handled before on the Cassowary Coast.

Living in the Wet Tropics means knowing the wet season can bring hot humid weather, heavy rain, flooding, tropical cyclones, landslips, road closures and power outages - and knowing our communities have a habit of pulling together when things get tough.

But being used to severe weather doesn’t mean we should become complacent, it’s important to be prepared!

This Get Ready Queensland Week (5–11 October 2026), we are encouraging residents to use the start of the season as a reminder to prepare their homes, families and properties before the monsoon rains and cyclone season arrive.

Residential ratepayers will have received a waste voucher with their latest rate notice, which can be used to dispose of a load of eligible dry household waste. It’s a good opportunity to clear unwanted items from around your home and yard before the wet season gets underway.

Mayor Teresa Millwood said while forecasts are pointing to a drier-than-average start to the season in the far north, now is still the time to prepare.

“A drier start to the season doesn’t mean we won’t see severe weather. Heavy rain, flooding and tropical cyclones can still develop quickly, and preparing now means you’re ready if conditions change,” Mayor Millwood said.

“Living on the Cassowary Coast, we know severe weather can quickly cut roads, disrupt power and essential services, isolate communities and impact everyday life.

“Don’t wait for a warning, you know the drill! Check your insurance, clear your gutters, secure loose outdoor items and use your waste voucher to clean up around your property.”

“Check your emergency kit supplies, and if you don’t have a household emergency plan, now is the time to put one in place.

“Talk through where you’ll go if you need to leave, what you’ll take and who might need your help. Remember to include your pets too.

“The best address in a disaster is our Disaster Dashboard. Bookmark it now for weather warnings, road closures, power outage information and local updates.

“A little preparation now can save a lot of stress later. Look out for one another and remember — if it’s flooded, forget it.”
