Community feedback shapes next steps for sewerage planning in Cardwell

Feedback from the community has helped shape our next steps on a potential future sewerage network for Cardwell.

Earlier this year we asked whether there was support for further planning and feasibility investigations into a potential future sewerage network following completion of the Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant.

After reviewing the community's feedback we have decided not to progress further planning or investigations into expanding the sewerage network to Cardwell at this time.

The conversation will return to the Cardwell community in 2031, when we will again consider local needs and seek feedback on whether further investigation is supported.

More than 240 submissions were received during the consultation, with responses closely balanced. Of those who participated, 45% supported further investigation, 48% did not support it and 7% were neutral or unsure.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Teresa Millwood thanked everyone who took the time to learn about the proposal, ask questions and share their views.

“We heard a range of views, including concerns about cost and affordability, confidence in existing wastewater systems, the potential environmental and growth benefits of a sewerage network, and questions about whether a network is needed at all” said Mayor Millwood.

“The responses were closely balanced, and that feedback has helped inform Council’s decision not to take the proposal further at this time.”

“This doesn’t close the conversation forever. Cardwell will continue to grow and change, and we will come back to the community in 2031 to understand whether local needs and views have changed.”
