Council to trial new hours at Murray Upper Waste Transfer Station
Published on 31 August 2026
We are trialling temporary new operating hours at Murray Upper Waste Transfer Station.
The last day of regular trading for Murray Upper will be Saturday, 29 August 2026.
Starting Sunday 20 September 2026, Murray Upper will be open every third Sunday of the month from 1pm to 4pm. The trial is part of a broader review of waste transfer station operations, in line with our Resource Recovery and Waste Strategy2026–2030.The trial will help determine how we can best deliver sustainable waste services that meet the needs of the community while contending with the increasing costs of maintaining current service levels, including impacts of rising fuel prices.
As part of the trial, we’ll monitor usage, operational costs, community access to alternative waste services, and any changes in service demand.
The findings of the trial will help inform future decisions regarding the long-term operation of Murray Upper.
During the trial, residents can continue to visit one of the region’s six Waste Transfer Stations, with the closest being at Cardwell (open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday every week from 9am to 1pm) and Tully (open seven days a week, hours vary – check the website for details).
Free waste vouchers are accepted at all Waste Transfer Stations, including Murray Upper.
