Due to recent dry weather and increased consumption, Level 1 water restrictions are now in place on the Cassowary Coast from today, Friday, 28 November 2025.

These restrictions apply to all private, commercial and industrial users unless otherwise stated.

Under Level 1 restrictions, sprinklers and irrigation systems may only be used on alternate days between 6am–8am and 6pm–8pm:

  • Odd-numbered houses: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Even-numbered houses: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
  • No automated watering on Mondays

Mayor Teresa Millwood said making small changes can help conserve water across the region.

“Council is encouraging Cassowary Coast residents to monitor their water use by following the designated times and days in which you can water,” said Mayor Millwood.

“Rainfall during October was below average across most of Queensland including the Cassowary Coast, and even though we are in the wettest region of Australia the community needs to be mindful of conserving our precious water. Every drop counts,” the Mayor said.

Councillor Chris Littlemore, the portfolio holder for water, is encouraging everyone in the community to be water-wise and to help steady intake levels until rainfall arrives.

“Council is allocated a daily amount of water for each creek across the region,” Councillor Littlmore said.

“As water levels of the creeks decline due to dry weather, it becomes difficult for Council to draw enough water into our networks,” he said.

“By applying water restrictions, it ensures creeks can continue to flow, and Council can continue to meet the demand required by our region.”

Council continues to progress several initiatives to strengthen long-term water security, including smart water meters, reservoir upgrades, asset renewals, and community water-wise education.
