Stronger together – Come and celebrate Cardwell’s community spirit!

The Cardwell community and visitors from across the region are invited to come together for a free community open day celebrating the people, stories and resilience that have helped shape Cardwell through severe weather events and natural disasters.
Stronger together: Celebrating community resilience will also celebrate the reopening of the Cardwell Library and the Cardwell Museum and Heritage Precinct following severe weather damage.
The event will be held on Friday 9 October 2026, from 10am to 4pm, across the Cardwell Library and the Cardwell Museum and Heritage Precinct.
Under the theme “Remembering our past. Strengthening our community. Preparing for our future,” the day will recognise Cardwell’s history and community spirit, while providing practical advice to help residents prepare for future severe weather events.
Activities will include guided library and heritage precinct tours, a Cardwell and District Historical Society cyclone commemoration exhibition, the Voices of Cardwell Conversation Café, digital workshops and Tech Help, Get Ready Queensland disaster preparedness information, children’s and family activities, community and emergency service information stalls, and morning and afternoon tea.
The event will also reflect on Cyclones Winifred, Larry and Yasi, which brought significant damage and disruption to the region and remain an important part of Cardwell’s shared history.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Teresa Millwood said the event was an opportunity to recognise the people who have supported Cardwell through some of its most challenging times.
“Cardwell has faced significant severe weather over the years, from major cyclones to the February 2025 floods, and each time we have seen people come together, support one another and help the community recover,” Mayor Millwood said.
“Stronger Together is about remembering the events that have shaped Cardwell, recognising the volunteers, residents and organisations who have helped along the way, and celebrating the community spirit that continues today.
“It is also an opportunity to look ahead, make sure we are prepared for future severe weather events and reconnect with these much-loved community spaces.”
Delivered through the ALIA Social Cohesion Program, the event coincides with Get Ready Queensland Week and COTA Seniors Month.
