Coastal recovery works
Council will shortly commence coastal recovery works at Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach, South Mission, Etty Bay and Bingil Bay as part of ongoing recovery from damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
About the works
The works will involve beach scraping using specialised machinery to help restore affected beach profiles, support the recovery of foreshore vegetation and provide a greater buffer against future coastal events.
Works will be undertaken progressively across the identified locations.
These works build on coastal recovery activities undertaken across the region over the past 12 months, including beach nourishment and coastal planting.
Timing
Works are expected to commence in October 2026 and will be undertaken progressively across each location.
Timing may vary depending on weather, tides and site conditions.
Locations
Works will be undertaken at:
-
Mission Beach
-
Wongaling Beach
-
South Mission Beach
-
Etty Bay
-
Bingil Bay
What to expect
While works are underway, residents and visitors may notice:
-
specialised machinery operating on the beach
-
temporary changes to beach access
-
temporary work areas or access restrictions
-
increased activity along sections of the foreshore.
Please take care around active work areas and follow all signage and directions from contractors.
Before works begin
Residents and property owners are asked to remove any private belongings from the beach and foreshore areas before works commence, including chairs, boats and other personal items.
Any items remaining within the work area that may prevent works from proceeding will be collected by Council.
Why are these works being undertaken?
The recovery works will assist in restoring coastal areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Jasper and help return these popular beaches towards their pre-event condition while supporting the longer-term resilience of the coastline.
Council thanks residents and visitors for their patience and cooperation while these recovery works are completed.
This project is made possible by assistance provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
