Residents Reap Divestment Benefits
At the March Local Government Meeting, Council voted to move forward with a staged divestment of the region’s community housing portfolio, a strategic move to ensure housing services are provided by experienced and specialised providers.
The divestment will enable dedicated housing providers to leverage their expertise in the community housing portfolio to support sustainable growth and meet the evolving needs of our region.
Mayor Teresa Millwood said, Council is committed to ensuring a process which will make for a smooth transition for existing community housing tenants with minimal impact or disruption. The resolution to divest Council’s community housing portfolio will be undertaken in stages.
“We understand that though the process will take some time, we want to reassure our existing tenants that this change will be managed with the utmost care, to ensure that tenants continue to have access to appropriate housing that meets their living situation.
“The ownership and management shift through this divestment process, will pave the way for new opportunities, creating a stronger, more sustainable community housing network that benefits both the region's growth and the people who call it home.
“We believe with this divestment we can facilitate an environment where the region’s housing sector is better positioned to thrive,” said Mayor Millwood.
The divestment aligns with Council’s 2024 Local Housing Action Plan, which is focused on a vision for a resilient, responsive housing system approach.
Stage One of the divestment will be progressed through an Expression of Interest (EOI) process, which will include industry expertise and the Department of Housing partnering with Council to find the most suitable provider. Council will be working with the Department of Housing and the successful EOI provider to facilitate a seamless transition for tenants.
