Approved Inspection Program - Dogs
Pursuant to section 134 of the Local Government Act 2009 (LGA) and section 113 of the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 (AMCDA), Cassowary Coast Regional Council resolved at its meeting on Thursday, 24 July 2025 to approve a systematic inspection program to be carried out within the Cassowary Coast Region.
Authorised persons will inspect properties, as identified below, in accordance with section 133 of the LGA to monitor compliance with the animal registration requirements of the AMCDA and the provisions of Council’s Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2022 in regard to the duty of owners to provide a proper animal enclosure to prevent their dogs from wandering or escaping from the property.
Purpose and Scope of Programs
The purpose of the program is to ensure that all dogs over the age of twelve (12) weeks are registered in accordance with the AMCDA and that dog owners have a proper enclosure that prevents their dog(s) from escaping from their property.
Authorised persons may visit and inspect properties between the hours of 6.30am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday, with the majority of inspections to be carried out during normal working hours or at such other reasonable time dependent upon the circumstances of the householder.
Program Times
The systematic inspection program for compliance with the registration requirements of section 46 of the AMCDA and for compliance with Section 13 Local Law No.2 (Animal Management) 2022 – duty to provide proper enclosure and prevent the animal from wandering – will commence on 1 September 2025 and end on 30 November 2025.
Properties to be Inspected
Properties may be inspected within the Cassowary Coast Region, including areas identified as containing challenges with the effective management of dogs.
