Reef Guardian Action Plan Strengthens Council’s Commitment to Reef Protection
As the Great Barrier Reef earns a nomination for a Lifetime Achievement Award at the United Nations’ Champions of the Earth Awards, Cassowary Coast Regional Council is stepping up its role in reef protection with the release of an updated Reef Guardian Action Plan.
The updated plan reinforces Council’s long-standing partnership with the Reef Authority through the Reef Guardian Council Program—an alliance of 20 coastal councils working together to safeguard one of the world’s most precious natural assets. The Action Plan outlines recent achievements, current initiatives, and exciting future projects that tackle key threats to reef health including climate change, coastal development, and land-based runoff.
With $920,000 in recent federal funding already supporting tangible environmental projects such as road stability upgrades, solar energy infrastructure, and a brand-new wetland at Warrina Lakes, Council is delivering real outcomes for the region’s environment and economy.
By aligning local projects with the national Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan, Council is not only strengthening local biodiversity but also unlocking new funding and collaboration opportunities. The Plan also supports efforts to reduce waste, protect water quality, and build climate resilience—all while contributing to broader state and national reef recovery strategies.
As the world celebrates the Reef’s legacy, the Cassowary Coast is delighted to play an active and informed role in its future—proving that local leadership can have a global impact.
