What’s Happening with Our Public Bins

Back

Thank you to everyone who had their say on the Bin Optimisation Project!

We’re grateful to the 295 community members who shared their thoughts and helped guide the future of public bin placement across the Cassowary Coast. Your input has been invaluable in ensuring our public spaces remain clean, safe, and user-friendly.

Public place bins offer convenient disposal points for waste, reducing the likelihood that rubbish will be discarded on the ground or in inappropriate places. Proper waste disposal helps prevent pollution of land, waterways, and oceans. It also minimizes harm to wildlife, which can ingest or become entangled in litter. Regularly emptied and well-maintained bins help control pests and reduce unpleasant odours.

Council has partnered with Telstra to install sensors on public bins, enabling real-time monitoring of fill levels, temperature, lid position, and collection data. This technology allows Council to optimise waste collection routes, prevent overflows, and reduce environmental impacts

Public place bins are a small but essential piece of urban infrastructure that play a big role in keeping our community clean, sustainable, and pleasant for everyone.

What’s Happening Next?

Based on your feedback:

  • 17 new bins will be installed in high-demand areas
  • 7 existing bins will be relocated to more effective spots
  • 1 bin will be removed due to low usage

Councils bin sensor monitoring will allow informed decisions around locations and servicing moving forward. Installation is programmed to commence from 18 June 2025 and conclude early in July 2025. Council remain committed to improve services to better meet community needs.
