Over $90,000 Awarded to Local Community and Arts Projects
Over $90,000 in funding was approved at the May Local Government Meeting, boosting community projects, arts initiatives, and local events across the Cassowary Coast through Council’s Community Grants and Support Program and the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).
This “super round” of the Community Projects and Initiatives stream saw the maximum grant amount doubled from $5,000 to $10,000 for eligible projects. Council received 28 applications, with 13 recommended for funding based on alignment with program priorities and community benefit.
Mayor Teresa Millwood said the quality of applications showed the passion and drive of local groups.
“This round has allowed Council to support more ambitious community ideas and facility upgrades that contribute to a vibrant, inclusive region,” Mayor Millwood said.
“We’re proud to back the people and groups working hard to make a difference in our towns and neighbourhoods.”
One of the successful applicants is the Cassowary Coast Poultry Club, which received $3,855.76 to purchase marquees, tables and other equipment to deliver safe, family-friendly events such as petting zoos and poultry shows.
The club’s grant journey marked a key milestone. Their initial application was ineligible as they were not yet an incorporated organisation – a requirement of the grants program. With guidance from Council’s Community Development Team, the club successfully became incorporated and reapplied.
Club President Lachlan Scullen said the process was a valuable step forward.
“We’re so grateful for Council’s support. Incorporating our club not only allowed us to access this grant but helped us build a stronger foundation for the future,” Mr Scullen said.
“This funding means we can run welcoming events in all weather and connect people of all ages with poultry as both a hobby and educational experience.”
The club is an active part of the community, participating in events like the annual Agricultural Shows and Innisfail Christmas Street Party, offering interactive experiences for families.
