March 31, 2021- COUNCIL TERMINATES DUNK ISLAND SPIT LEASE

Back

Cassowary Coast Regional Council has terminated the lease of the Dunk Island Spit to Mayfair 101.
A Council spokesman said the termination notice had been issued earlier this week, returning control and management of the site to Council.
Council worked closely with the former lessee to activate the Spit; however, due to ongoing complications, the lessee was unable to meet the commitments outlined in the lease.
Since taking posession of the site on 30 March 2021, Council has carried out a preliminary clean-up of the area to accommodate incoming guests over the Easter Holidays.
Officers are in the process of appointing a short-term caretaker to manage the site, take bookings and clean the amenities.
Council expects to advertise the tender for the Dunk Island Spit Lease in April 2021. The objective being, to see the Spit realise its full potential and complement the many attractions on the mainland and the wider region.
Beyond this, it is not appropriate for Council to comment on Mayfair 101’s general business situation. As such all enquiries for additional comment should be referred to Mayfair 101.
