Council Strengthens Local Focus with a Refreshed Procurement Approach

Cassowary Coast Regional Council has taken proactive steps to improve transparency, boost local supplier engagement, and strengthen its procurement practices, with the endorsement of its 2025/2026 Forward Procurement Plan and an updated Procurement Policy at this month’s Council meeting.

The Forward Procurement Plan outlines 65 anticipated procurement activities valued at over $200,000 for the upcoming financial year, spanning capital works, operational projects, and grant-funded initiatives.

The Plan aims to provide suppliers, particularly local businesses, with early visibility of upcoming opportunities. It supports timely project delivery by improving internal planning and enables better market engagement through increased transparency.

Mayor Teresa Millwood said the Plan was a clear signal of Council’s commitment to smarter, more strategic procurement.

“The Forward Procurement Plan is a practical tool to open the door wider for local businesses,” Mayor Millwood said.

“By flagging major tenders in advance, we’re helping local suppliers prepare, reducing red tape, and ultimately keeping more investment in our region.”

In addition to the Plan, Council adopted a revised Procurement Policy to improve governance and compliance with legislative requirements. The updated policy includes more detailed internal procedures, greater clarity for staff, and a stronger focus on value-for-money outcomes and local supplier engagement.

“Our updated Procurement Policy ensures we’re applying best practice across the board,” Mayor Millwood said.

“It sets clear expectations, encourages consistency, and helps deliver better outcomes for both Council and our community.”
