Cassowary Coast Steps Up to Support Local Events

Cassowary Coast Regional Council has reinforced its commitment to growing a vibrant calendar of events, approving sponsorship for this year's GBR50 and Innisfail Riverfest at the April Council Meeting.

 Mayor Teresa Millwood said the sponsorships align with Council’s Events Strategy 2024–2028, which aims to enhance the region’s profile, support economic growth, and promote sustainable events.

“These events celebrate our unique identity, from the GBR50 celebrations honouring our connection to the Great Barrier Reef, to Innisfail Riverfest, which showcases our local pride and regional collaboration,” said Mayor Millwood.

Councillor Renee McLeod echoed the Mayor’s sentiments about the value of community events on the Cassowary Coast.

“Bringing people together through events helps build a strong sense of pride and connection, something Council is committed to nurturing through the Events Strategy,” said Cr McLeod.

GBR50 Event (June 2025)

Council will provide $10,000 to support the new community-led event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act. Held at Mission Beach, the event will feature a weekend of activities highlighting the area as the 'Birthplace of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park’.

Innisfail Riverfest (2025–2027)

Council has committed to support the Innisfail Riverfest, pending annual budget approval. If the 2025 event is successful, Council will provide continued event sponsorship of $22,500 over three years. Riverfest has quickly become a favourite, drawing thousands and celebrating local culture, businesses, and community spirit.

These events support the guiding principles of the Cassowary Coast Event Strategy 2024–2028. The Strategy focuses on protecting our environment, recognising and involving Traditional Custodians, making our region a great place to live and visit, encouraging innovation, and building stronger connections between Council, event organisers, and the community.
