$1.2 Billion Dollar Transport Infrastructure Plan Secures Region's Future
Cassowary Coast Regional Council has released a new 10-year plan to look after and improve the region’s roads, bridges, footpaths, and transport facilities.
The Transport Asset Management Plan will guide how Council manages over $1.2 billion worth of transport infrastructure now and into the future. The plan focuses on keeping services safe, reliable, and sustainable, while preparing for a growing population and changing weather patterns.
Mayor Teresa Millwood said the plan was an important step in making sure the community’s money is spent wisely.
“Our roads, bridges, and footpaths are essential for everyday life.”
“This plan helps us keep them in good condition while preparing for future growth, improving safety, and meeting the needs of our community,” Mayor Millwood said.
Key points from the plan:
- Around $27 million per year is planned to maintain, renew and upgrade transport infrastructure.
- At least $15 million each year will go towards renewing older assets.
- The plan recommends revisions of design strategies to include both rising sea levels and extreme weather events such increased storm and cyclone intensities.
- Council will continue to track and manage rising construction costs whilst prioritising local contractors to support local businesses
- A specific focus on critical assets (roads and bridges) and consistent improvements to inspection and maintenance practices will help Council prioritise repairs and upgrades
This plan works alongside Council’s long-Term Financial Plan to make sure services stay affordable. Financial checks show Council is in a strong position to keep up with transport needs over the next 10 years.
Council will continue improving how it collects and uses data, manages inspections, and applies for funding to reduce the pressure on ratepayers.
